Royal Rumble 2014 Surprise Entrants

Royal Rumble Surprise Entrants

Over the last 5 years, surprise entrants have become a staple of the Royal Rumble match, often creating the most memorable moments of the contest. It’s also allowed a number of superstars (past and present) the opportunity to return to the spotlight and make a splash on the WWE landscape. Here’s a look at who we can expect to make a return during the 2014 Royal Rumble match.

*Update* this post may now contain spoilers.

It should be noted that this list is based on news, rumours and, in some cases, pure speculation. Each candidate is also rated on the likeliness of their return.

Jake Roberts

Jake Roberts

Thanks in part to DDP’s Yoga program, Jake Roberts appears to be healthy again, following a string of substance abuse problems. With this in mind, Roberts announced at WrestleCon 2013 his desire to appear as a surprise entrant at the 2014 Royal Rumble match, and has been campaigning to do so ever since. His appearance at Old School Raw was well received, but it remains to be seen if he’s capable of performing in-ring.

Overall Likeliness: Medium

The changes Jake has made in his life will certainly complement the WWE’s Wellness Policy, but it depends on his in-ring condition. He may be 58, but older people have been in the Rumble before, and they could handle his appearance without much action.

Sheamus

Sheamus

Sheamus has been out of action since August 2013, after suffering a tear in his shoulder. WWE announced he’d be on the shelf between four and six months, which would put him in prime position to return at the Rumble.

Overall Likeliness: High

The 2012 Royal Rumble winner would be the perfect return from injury candidate, and a return at one of WWE’s biggest PPVs would be the ideal way to get Sheamus back in the mix in time for Wrestlemania season.

Christian

Christian

You have to go all the way back to 2005 to see Christian’s last Royal Rumble appearance, and September 2013 to see his last appearance on WWE television. Christian was taken out by The Shield when we saw him last, so has no specific reason to not come back.

Overall Likeliness: High

There seem to no impediments to Christian’s return, and it’d be great to see him in a Rumble, considering it will have beenĀ 9 years since his previous entry into the match.

Evan Bourne

Evan Bourne

Although you might not know it (especially if you’re just going off WWE programming), Evan Bourne is still an active part of the roster. The past couple of years haven’t been that great for Bourne, after he failed a Wellness Policy test for the second time and then was involved in a car accident which broke his foot in four places. Bourne has made a return to NXT television, but has yet to appear on WWE’s main shows.

Overall Likeliness: Low

Despite his talents, WWE don’t seem to be falling over themselves to get Bourne to return to TV. He’d be good addition to the Rumble, but WWE may not want to push someone on their final warning.

John Morrison

John Morrison

Since Morrison left the WWE in 2011, he’s always stated that a return to his former employer would be on the cards. John has been active on the indy scene over the last couple of years, picking up titles and working on his previously criticized mic-skills. WWE has no apparent beef with Morrison, so a return is probably likely to happen whenever both parties are happy.

Overall Likeliness: Medium

Morrison stole the show at the 2010 Royal Rumble, and is surprisingly high on the list of best Rumble performers in history, so definitely has a place in the match.

Rob Van Dam

Rob Van Dam

Van Dam’s part-time contract status means that he can dip in and out of WWE at any time, and given his enduring popularity, a return at the Royal Rumble would be greatly accepted.

Overall Likeliness: Medium

RVD has been off WWE television since October’s Battleground, so has had a decent amount of time off. You’d assume Van Dam might also want to be a part of Wrestlemania season, so the timing would be perfect.

Undertaker

Undertaker

Undertaker hasn’t competed in the Royal Rumble since 2009, and is now only reserved for Wrestlemania. There’s always a part of me that wants Taker to make one last Rumble appearance, and it can provide the opportunity to kickstart a rivalry that would develop into a match at Wrestlemania.

Overall Likeliness: Low

Every year that I’ve run this site, Undertaker has been on the list of potential surprise entrants, and has yet to be in the match. Undertaker is for Wrestlemania, and that’s fine.

Goldberg

Goldberg

With rumours of a Goldberg/Ryback clash set for Wrestlemania, WWE needs a way to establish a rivalry between the two. The Royal Rumble would be the perfect stage to do exactly that, perhaps with both men facing off, or one causing the other’s elimination.

Overall Likeliness: Low

Goldberg appears to have to be wooed by WWE, and might need the right conditions and stipulations for it to work. If they could work an appearance at the Rumble that would be great, but the general feeling is that Goldberg’s return would be a one-shot deal.

Sting

Sting

Sting would perhaps be the ultimate coup for WWE, and in turn, the ultimate Royal Rumble match surprise entrant. With TNA being TNA, Wrestlemania 30 on the horizon and rumours flying that Sting is considering retirement, the time for him to finally join WWE is now. Should that involve the Royal Rumble match appearance, then it would make it all the sweeter.

Overall Likeliness: Medium

Sting would probably top all surprise entrants in history should he be in the 2014 Rumble, but WWE are more than likely saving him for Wrestlemania, if they even sign him on at all.

Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle

The general consensus is that Angle’s career wouldn’t be complete without a return to the company in which he made his name. Kurt would be a welcome entrant in the Rumble, and would allow him to dive straight back in to action.

Overall Likeliness: Low

There aren’t an major impediments between Kurt & WWE, and he’d be a great addition to the build up to Wrestlemania XXX. I think it depends on who Angle’s eventual opponent would be, and a return would probably dependent on the right person for Kurt to face.

Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan

The two-time winner of the Royal Rumble and the world’s most recognisable pro-wrestler will always have a place in WWE, depending on his relationship with Vince of course. The atmosphere would be electric should Hogan enter the Royal Rumble, and would be that perfect shot of nostalgia that makes surprise entrants so popular.

Overall Likeliness: Low

His age and condition may not be on his side, but reports are saying that Hogan is dedicating his time to getting into decent shape, perhaps in time for an appearance at Wrestlemania. Time will tell if he can get in good enough shape to compete, or at least get involved in some action, but even so, they’d probably save it for Mania.

Diesel

Diesel

Diesel has been confirmed to have checked into the same hotel that other WWE talents are staying for the Rumble in Pennsylvania. Nash also posted a picture of his recently dyed hair and goatee, claiming it was for an acting role, but it’s highly likely Big Daddy Cool will be in the Royal Rumble match.

Overall Likeliness: High

Kevin Nash has been spotted in Pennsylvania, and his change in apperance suggests a return to his Diesel character. Nash was popular as a surprise entrant in the 2011 Royal Rumble, so expect to see him again.

Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho

Jericho has too been spotted in and around Pennsylvania over the weekend, so its hard to discredit the idea that Y2J might appear in the Royal Rumble. Jericho would also surely want to be a part of Wrestlemania season, which always starts at the Rumble.

Overall Likeliness: High

Aside from being in the host city of this year’s Royal Rumble PPV, Jericho became one of the greatest ever surprise entrants last year, so might not have been able to resist the chance to do the same again.

That’s the list so far. As the Rumble gets nearer, expect the list to change or additions to be made. You can also make suggestions in the comments below. You never know, I might add them to the list.

Goldberg is the ultimate return. He should return and smash everyone. Batista returns and spoils Goldberg chance of winning rumble leading to wrestlemania match. Pls Ryback is no match for Goldberg. He has poor charisma and style, may be Ryback vs Sheamus or Ryback vs Big show. Here is the top card for wrestlemania:

    Goldberg vs Batista
    Rock vs Randy orton
    Undertaker vs Brock Lesnar
    John Cena vs Stonecold
    HBK vs Dan Bryan
Mark Henry vs Big E Langston
    Big show vs Ryback
    Sheamus vs Roman Reigns
    CM Punk vs Curtis Axel

I think if and to me its not a big if anymore but if Sting joins WWE, it will definately be on Stings terms. HHH wants him A LOT. Know that Bautista is returning but not when or where is something that is needed. The ANIMAL needs to unleash his fury. Take Orton out at Wrestlemania. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rock showed up. Also, to me, Goldberg would be awesome to see. All, I’d want to see is him destroy Ryback like he was a twig. With Sting, ICON vs ICON. LEGEND vs LEGEND. Anybody ever thought of this…I don’ t believe Undertaker has ever beat sting in a match in WCW when he was mean mark calloway. DEAD MAN vs DEAD MAN. If the writers do it right if he comes to WWE. Don’t ruin Sting at Wrestlemania. Then you say how. I know how. How do you keep a streak intact and also not have sting lose to the Undertaker basically acknowledging that they are the two icons of wrestling………..Neither makes it to the 10 count. Who wins…Nobody….Who loses Nobody….Undertaker keeps his 0 intact and Sting doesn’t get shit on like all the other former WCW wrestlers to join WWE.
